Do NOT say you are old today. It sounds easy right? What if it is your birthday, like mine today. Still as easy? I hope so. We want to challenge you to not say it… ever!
I have not struggled with my ‘number’ in adulthood. There are plenty of other challenges over here, but shitting on my age is not one of them. It always perplexed me through the years hearing “OMG I’m turning 25/30/40 –GOD help me I am getting so OLD!!!!” This small but powerful word can affect the way we see ourselves, and ultimately how others see us. Let’s try to make the impact positive! We have all heard the expression:
“Watch your thoughts, they become your words;
watch your words, they become your actions;
watch your actions, they become your habits….”
If you think and say you are getting old, then your actions and habits will follow. I do not know about you, but I want to continue a vibrant life, full of fun and exploration. An “old” mindset can limit you from achieving all that you are capable of becoming. Your subconscious dictates what you do not consciously work on, so if you let the societal “over the hill” BS take over, you’re in trouble.
We need to look at aging as something aspirational. Time closer to your goals. When we create goals and focus on timelines to achieve them (1 year, 5 years, 10 years, 20 years) our times around the sun are far less important than what we have achieved. It’s not “oh shit, I am turning…” its “I am so excited to be one year closer to my dream!” In tandem with goal setting, research suggests that your overall mental health, including your mood, your sense of well-being, and your ability to handle stress, keeps improving every single year of your life. Like, until the end. I mean, that’s exciting right? To just keep getting more well adjusted?
It is also a super convenient excuse in many situations: ‘sorry I blew my temper, I cannot wait until my 89th birthday when I am super chill…’
So will you please accept this challenge? I promise that awareness is the first step. No one but you will notice you do not call yourself “old” – its really not even that funny if humor is your lane. C’mon, you young sexy thing – you can do it – say nice things to yourself about yourself. Be Your Best Bitch!
